St David’s Day

Wednesday, February 25th, 2015

Spring is upon us and the 1st March brings us St David’s Day. This annual festivity celebrates the life of the patron saint of Wales and Welsh culture. St David who is believed to have lived to 100 years old travelled throughout Wales and Britain, also making a famous pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Throughout his lifetime he founded twelve monasteries in Wales and eventually became an archbishop.  St David left the legacy to his followers to“Be cheerful and keep your faith and belief, and do the little things that you have heard and seen through me”. Celebrations on the day include parades, church services and concerts. Whether you are celebrating or not this weekend, this ‘Sterling Silver Welsh Dragon Charm’ (£10.75) is the perfect addition to any charm bracelet!

Pancake Recipe

Monday, February 16th, 2015

This delicious recipe makes enough pancakes for approximately two people. You will need:

250ml Plain Flour

1 Tablespoon Sugar

1 Teaspoon Baking Powder

¼ Teaspoon Baking Soda

¼ Teaspoon Salt

1 Beaten Egg

250ml Buttermilk (or Sour Milk)

1 Tablespoon Cooking Oil

Mix all the dry ingredients. Make sour (acidified) milk by adding 1 tablespoon lemon juice and top up with whole milk to make 1 cup (250ml). Leave the mixture to stand for 5 mins. If using buttermilk use full fat or the batter will be too thin. Beat the egg into the milk and add the cooking oil. Then mix into the dry ingredients to form a batter. Don’t mix too much, slightly lumpy and thick is how it should be, if you over-mix the pancakes won’t be fluffy

Top Pancake Tips

  •  Use very little oil in the pan and keep the heat at a medium-high level, not too hot.
  • The pancakes are ready to flip when the surface begins to bubble.
  • Try adding blueberries into the batter at the end.
  • Oven cook the streaky bacon and top with maple syrup.

We have tested these out and can assure you they are yummy! Scroll down to see the final result!

Valentine cared for his fellow prisoners and is believed to have cured the blindness of a girl in one of his final acts before writing her a love letter signed ‘From your Valentine’ prior to his execution on the 14th Feburary 270. Today we celebrate our feelings and affection by exchanging cards, chocolates and flowers with our special ‘valentine’.
